FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY - FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER EDINBURGH GLASGOW STIRLING FALKIRK NORTH BERWICK BONNYRIGG DALKEITH CRAMOND JOPPPA PORTOBELLO #EDINBURGHPHOTOGRAPHER #LEITHPHOTOGRAPHER
Most folks know us as a weddings photography studio who dabble in the commercial world of corporate portraits, product photography and events photography. But if you are one of our recent clients over the past several years you will have noticed a wee shift into more family, baby, newborn and maternity photography sessions.
Now when you ask families, especially parent and grandparents - and YES even the great grandparents - what is the most important thing you might save in the event of losing your home if you had 10 seconds to decide? That's right! The family photos! The baby photos, the wedding photos. The graduation pics! Any and all of the above is the most consistent pattern of answers we receive when talking to or reviewing with clients. This speaks volumes about the importance of preserving memories and our own personal history through photographs and what it's come to mean to the modern family.
It might seem like an odd choice but photographers and photography have been a part of our history for almost a couple of hundred years now. This amazing medium has helped chronicle the biggest events in history as well as the little family adventures we all take for granted at the time, the ones that never fail to make us smile and laugh when we are reminded of the.
Photography and its end result - photographs - outlive individuals, families and the photographer. They live on for generations. They perfectly fossilise a moment in time. It may also bring total joy and inspiration to another generation as they seek out who you once were in order to better understand their own past. For them it's like a wonderful jigsaw puzzle that brings alive a past that tells a story long after our time has come and gone.
Pictures, like music, can speak directly to our emotions. They can make us feel huge amounts of sympathy, empathy, joy and sorrow. Sometimes all at once. It's an expression of every human emotion sometimes, especially depending on who looks at the photograph. A picture can very well be worth a thousand words when the photographer, and subject, may well not have the words to describe the feelings they might have had at that moment and they continue to do this long, long after we are gone. If you're not the best at expressing feelings or emotions photography can be an incredibly important visual language that helps you communicate. It certainly helped me become a better communicator and person. Photography helps families and photographers alike to remember when we have forgotten or when we can simply no longer remember at all.
As you know we're self-employed so our health is absolutely everything to us. We don't work - we don't get paid. It's as simple as that. So more and more these days we are seeing people criticising the NHS left right and centre. Sadly this is more about waiting times and staffing than it is about the quality of the staff and the lengths they go to keep us safe when we are at our most vulnerable. Just last year Katie's Mum had a wee heart scare and she was seen to so quick even though it was a weekend and the A+E was overflowing with urgent cases. We were tended to by friendly, warm and reassuring nurses and doctors who made us feel safe and not just another bother on a busy night. I myself had the wonderful pleasure of gout not so long ago and that ended with a quick trip to the emergency room. I was seen within a few minutes and in and out within a few hours. Just cannot believe how good they have been every time we've been there. And also our GP's round the corner from us at the Mill Lane Surgery are always awesome whenever we've been in there despite how busy they are. They've been fantastic. The nurses who take Katie's blood every month are brilliant even though Katie is a total needle-phobe. They are always reassuring and kind and mercifully quick!
Basically we've been through the system fair bit this past couple of years with health scares and lots of little things but generally we've always had this superb experience when being treated. I'm personally in awe of the quiet confidence and professionalism of our frontline staff. The ones we've met are all a credit to their profession and we are incredibly lucky to have been treated by them.
This is why we run an across the board NHS discount. Doesn't matter if you're a Nurse, Doctor, Admin or a Paramedic, We love giving just a little something back to these amazing people and their families on some of the happiest days of their lives. If you are one of the amazing people working in any way in the NHS who is planning their big day, whether it be a wee celebration in a field or on a beach all the way up to a big manor house or hotel affair we'd be delighted to work with you to create some irreplaceable memories at a considerate price. BABY NAMING CEREMONY (AND PHOTOGRAPHY)...
These are an increasingly popular alternative for parents not wanting an old-school church ceremony for their newborn. Many new mums and dads want to celebrate their new arrival but not necessarily with the traditional religious connotations that baptisms, Christenings, B'rit milah's and Aqiqahs offer.
There are many many benefits of having a baby naming ceremony instead of a christening. Firstly, there are no legal requirements. Baby namings can be held just about anywhere and at any time much like weddings here in Scotland ( That's right you can tie the knot anywhere you blooming well like sunshine!). The ceremony can be super personalised to your own specific circumstances and tastes, and you don’t have to have a partner or be married to hold one.
THINGS TO CONSIDER...
One of the most important things to consider is who will conduct the ceremony itself. You may want to hire a professional celebrant. This is the most popular option as they will be able to offer advice and ensure the day is a big success.
You may choose to have it performed by a close friend or relative. This gives it a more personal touch and is cheaper. Readings and speeches are encouraged even if a celebrant conducts the official bits.
There are pros and cons for both of these but a lot will depend on your budget and your desired level of formality. It should be noted that celebrant’s can be hired at a fairly good price though depending on your needs. A baby naming usually lasts about 20 minutes with the after celebrations continuing a wee bit longer!
PLACES FOR YOUR BABY NAMING...
Many people hold naming ceremonies at home these days. This has the convenience of being a comfy relaxed environment to you but is also somewhere familiar to your baby/child. Others prefer somewhere more formal such as their town hall or a local hotel. Most venues can be hired out just as you would hire them for a wedding or birthday.
DID YOU KNOW...
You do not have to be a baby to have a naming ceremony!!!! Children of all ages can have one and it is absolutely ideal way to welcome your adopted children into the family.
Just a heads up….We at the Matt.E.Photography company are changing our package prices as of the 27/02/2018. If you have paid your deposit for your date before this date then you will be entitled to the 2016/2017 price scale. Anyone booking after is subject to the new pricing scale.
…BECAUSE NO SCOTTISH WEDDING IS COMPLETE WITHOUT HIGHLAND COWS, TARTAN AND SNOW! #OUTLANDERWEDDING #SASSENACH #AYE
One of our favourite snaps from the Aussie/Scottish wedding of Lisa and John. They kind of lucked out as they got their winter wedding despite some serious travel drama and a protracted layover in Munich. Lisa is the worlds biggest Outlander fan and couldn't just have the Scottish husband she had to go the whole haggis covered hog and fly over from Oz for a good old destination wedding. They got married in the Old Kirk at Glencorse House and had their beautiful Highland Cow accesorized reception at one of Edinburgh's most gorgeous estate hotels Prestonfield House. Some gorgeous piccies!
aussie outlander destination wedding EDINBURGH - be still yer bAWDY wedding ovaries sassenachs!!! #outlanderwedding #wedding #weddingphotography #edinburghweddging #destinationwedding #glencorsewedding #Oldkirk
So we may have shared with you recently a few cheeky photos from the festive season wedding of Lisa and John. Our instagram blew up with some insanely lovely comments and well wishes.
Lisa and John travelled all the way from Australia to get married in the country of their favourite Scottish themed TV show - Outlander. Much like their TV show their travels were not without some serious cliffhangers! Poor John had an epileptic fit on the journey over as well. So they had to take respite in Munich and postpone the wedding hastily by 6 days! Thankfully with some incredible shuffling, juggling and organising by their wonderful Maid of Honour Caroline the whole thing came off without a hitch….the second time!
So the more die-hard fans of you may recognise the beautiful medieval kirk at Glencorse House! The rest of you might be interested to know that this very church was the place where Claire and Jamie and tied the knot in season 1 epsiode 7(The Wedding)! BRAW! We are less than secret fans of the show now in the Matt.E.Photography household.
If you haven't already paid a visit to the gorgeous Glencorse House then you are missing out. It is absolutely stunning as is the chapel. Maybe go on a day with less ice and snow lol. The pathways were a wee bit slippy lol. And also if you fancy the MOTHER of all romantic getaways to enjoy your Scottish stay in luxurious style then it's hard to beat Prestonfield House Hotel where Lisa and John has their reception. My own Sister-in-law Kirsty got married here a few short years ago to her hubby Nick. This place is absolutely stunning! Check out the tapestry rooms. Watch out for ornery Peacocks when you venture out to see the field of beautiful traditional Highland Coos :-)

OMG! It's been a busy few months! We're just catching up on our blogging the now. Thanks for waiting so patiently! To be honest we've been dying to share this our first ever Huntingtower Hotel shoot since we shot it a few months ago and you'll soon see why. This pair are just gorgeous and the love they share is plain for all to see. We met Rebecca and Scott through our most recent wedding photography competition which a few of you entered. It was a gorgeous day and a truly personal intimate day filled with lots of love and laughter. The staff at the hotel did a bang up job helping Rebecca and Scott to realise their own unique perfect day, afternoon tea, smoke grenades and all! :-)
Spanish Gin Festival In Leith You Say??? #dontmindifido #spanishgin #festival #eventsphotographyscotland #scottisheventsphotographer #taparestaurantleith #edinburghtapas #leith #dining #gin #scotland #spain #nordes #vones #fevertree #valentia #larios #si
I'm getting hungry just writing this bloody thing! So anyone who knows Katie and I will invariably have had the pleasure of hearing us rant about how much we LOVE our local Spanish tapas restaurant Tapa! You may if you've been very lucky have been taken there for dinner! This is literally our favourite place in Edinburgh and we are biased but this is more than likely the greatest tapas place in the whole world - no contest! #ISAIDNOCONTEST
Now apart from being two of the nicest guys out there Dan and Greg are two wonderful hosts who keep on coming up with wonderful events for the community at large especially when it comes to promoting local produce and of course Spanish culture. If you've ever taken in a New Year at Tapa you will remember it fondly! So when the opportunity to hold a little gin soiree came along they jumped at the chance with a several week window to pull it all together. With little to no advertising this went from a small informal event to being sponsored by Fever Tree and several amazing gin brands. Talk about things growing legs!
So imagine it - ten-ish stalls of super high quality gins and mixers and accompanying Jamon and bread and 3/4 different kinds of Paella throughout the day. It was foodie heaven. I ate my own bodyweight in Jamon Iberico. As you can see the regulars and a whole new bunch of new 'spirited' revellers and aficionados turned out en force to sample the festivals wares. I've never tasted gin like it. Family favourite seemed to be by unanimous vote the nautical themed Nordes. I won't even begin to describe how lovely this gin was - you just have to go buy some and see for yourself. And Tapa are doing an extra special Burns Night this January 25th as they are exploring the special relationship between Spanish Sherry and our own national drink!
Remember if you're looking for event photography we would be delighted to help. Even if Katie and I are off shooting weddings, one of our associate photographers would be delighted to talk to you about your needs. DM us via our contact form for all enquiries!
