Sup scallywags!?! We've just had the most incredible weekend. Firstly we had an extra special day with the adorable Lorna and Conor over at the Caledonian Waldorf Astoria, Edinburgh. Being wedding photographers as a job is a huge privilege. We meet the best people, on the best day of their lives so far and we get to help them remember it for the rest of their lives. We also had a wicked time with the team down at the Edinburgh Wedding Fair and Fashion Show at the Corn Exchange. Met some pretty amazeballs couples and we can safely say 2019 and 2020 are looking like we'll have some seriously cool piccies to share with you all soon! In the meantime lets revel in the Irish beauty that is the love between these two perfect human beans!

Ok so speaking as a "professional wedding photographer" (Just in case you were fooled by the Jurassic Park t-shirts and constant Zombie chat) I hate when people shoot over my shoulder with their iphones. I hate Uncle Bob and his semi-pro DSLR set up and his pals getting in my way with their ipad screens. It does however make my dentist very happy as I have been known to grind my teeth in anger; so badly my fillings come loose. Don't get me wrong - that irritation is from when people who do do that do so at the "pivotal" moments. For the most part everyone is very respectful of the couples wishes and the photographers and I want guests and couples to have as many quality memories as possible.
The first big DO that I have to condone when it comes to weddings when it comes to phones and ipads etc is......
### DON'T FORGET - SORT YOUR WEDDING HASHTAG! ####
Yes you may feel like a proper millennial cliche but cliches can be comforting - like a pair of old slippers or a nice hot mug tea - but seriously if you're gonna wait anywhere from 4-12 weeks for your photos it will be really nice to relive the day and night of your big day before you get the professional photos back. Having a wedding is a huge emotional high and reliving that even in some small way you are getting your monies worth to be sure to be sure.
Everyone has fancied themselves a DJ at some point. If you've already sorted an act or a DJ but they finish too early.....

If you've got a half decent laptop and some amps then why not let your guests take turns knocking out some banging tunes! I've seen so many weddings now that ended this way and they were all mental but all seriously good fun. Or you could just hire DJ Acid Reflux and The Spicy Chuffs
Things you can do differently.....After all hindsight is a beautiful thing. My incredible wife and I loved our wedding as it gave us the opportunity to bring 200 odd family and friends together for a right barn-stormer of a wedding. We regretted nothing.......

The organisational bits and bobs in the year preceding our wedding were brutal on occasion with our work schedules. My amazing wife is incredible. She is a school teacher and part-time wedding photographer and is the most organised person I know. This led us to hiring our amazing weddings and events co-ordinator Roni Hyslop of All Wrapped Up who is in our opinion the Scottish Godmother of weddings. Her 20 odd years of events planning came in handy as the months leading up to the wedding went by without so much as a speed bump. Cannot recommend her services highly enough, especially if you have a heavily themed canvas wedding with a million details or any medium to ridiculous shindig if you've got stupidly busy lives like us.

***DON'T NOT TREAT YOUR FEET***
We've all been at a wedding where the happy couple have ditched their formal footwear for a pair of Converse, right? It looks cool but bear in mind that it's also bloody comfy by comparison to a pair of shoes you're probably not even broken in properly before the wedding day itself. We cannot express what a good idea this is. I forgot and then had to deal with immensley painful heels and arches over a 3 day hangover in Venice. Not-fun! You'll be on your feet for up to 18 hours on the day of your wedding. So trainers, connies, flats - any of the above are a solid choice as your shift change footwear. Be freakin prepared! You never know when you'll have to try and beat Aunty Doris to the buffet or a Zombie to an exit/ingress.
£££DON'T DO WHAT YOU THINK OTHER PEOPLE WILL LIKE£££
Since this BIG DAY is all about you guys you really need to let the freak flag fly and paraphrasing Ol' Blue Eyes - do it your way! You can overload a wedding by buying every idea you've got on your pinterest boards but sometimes simpler is better. We initially looked at Castles all up and down Scotland from Edinburgh to Ackergill on the North Coast. This was a staple fantasy, mainly because I am obsessed with history and zombie apocalypse survivalism. If you're gonna get caught out on the day of your wedding, better it be mob-handed and in a heavily fortified defensible position with good line of site and obvious bottle-necks. Just saying! We soon realised that our surviving grandparents were ranging in ages from 74 up to 94 so we had to bring our celebration down to earth a wee bit. But funnily enough this had some extra added bonuses. No longer looking at 10-20k for a castle wedding of nearly 200 people we were able to spend budget on things like entertainment, candy floss and popcorn carts, musicians and the like. So when we found the beautiful Kinkell Byre just down the road from Katie's Grandad Jimmy we knew we were onto a winner. We threw in a BBQ and a hog roast and a whisky buffet for good measure and it was something that was simply quintessentially us. We even had room for a DIY home cinema playing a loop of all our favourite movies as a chill-out space away from the dance floor. Job done! Back of the net!

If you don't have an events planner or co-ordinator for your big day then set yourself timetable goals! Intrinsically this means being very strict with yourself on purchases and watching the hell out of your budget but also have milestones. If you're like us and were planning for 3+ years then you can kind of take it easy, certainly at first. But then we realised if we didn't start putting down at least the deposits and signing contracts that we would soon not be getting any of our first choice vendors. A lot of wedding specialists seem to agree that 15 months is about adequate to organise a medium to large scale wedding. So aim to be emailing or calling your vendors in stages - 12 months, 6 months and 10 days before hand to make sure everyone is on top of everything including yourselves. This gives you ample opportunity to inform vendors of an scheduling or format changes for the big day which is especially important for Caterers, Bands, Photgraphers and Celebrants. Even if this take the form of group chats on Facebook, Whatsapp etc this is a great way for vendors to communicate before the big day arrives especially if they've never worked together before.

Let's not forget that just plain old life can be stressful enough. When you're holding down full-time jobs and organising a wedding the extra strain on your free time can be a lot. So in all seriousness and in the words of Donna and Tom from Parks and Rec - TREAT YO-SELF!!! Try and get as many date nights in as you can but maybe plan a few weekends away. Katie and I took a few days out here and there to go to the spa which was amazing. When you're carrying the world on your shoulders there's nothing better than room service and a deep tissue massage - trust us!

What is a Handfasting I hear you say????
As any good Seanachaidh or Tradition Bearer of the Highlands will tell you, a handfasting is an extremely old Pagan custom, dating back to the age of the ancient Celts. The handfasting was originally meant to be an engagement. Two people would declare an official union between themselves for a year and a day as a sort of trial period. So in essence the handfasting was an official part of the trial marriage. Back in the day people didn't necessarily live together before marriage so this was a great way to dip the proverbial toe in and test the waters. After one year and one day the couple would either officially start/celebrate their marriage or they would go their separate ways. This tradition has been somewhat revived on account of a massive surge in popularity of Scottish traditions. This is a lot to do with Scotland becoming one of the worlds most popular destination wedding locations. Lots of ex-pats, Canadians, Americans are looking to imbue their big day with a nice wee bit of Scottish tradition to get back to their roots.
Scottish Churches were in fact still practicing handfasting right up until the beginning of the 20th century. Today, Wiccans and Pagans and couples wanting to embrace Scottish traditional elements have taken handfasting as an integral part of their wedding ceremony. Handfasting can be included in a mixutre of legal celebrations in Scotland. But if you are a true Pagan or Wiccan the handfasting can actually be the ceremony itself. If your spirituality is not expressed by modern religions then this can be a great way to personalise your commitments.
The Handfasting Ceremony
There are many variations of the traditional handfasting. After the bride and groom both declare their intent to enter into this union, the hands of the couple are clasped and fastened together with a cord or cords just before, just after, or during their vows are made to one another. The wrapping of the cord forms an infinity symbol. The handfasting knot that is tied is a symbolic representation of oneness between the couple. In a show of unity, they become bound to each other. In Scotland the above is more usually done with a pair of off-cuts of family tartan. Framed these make an excellent wedding momento to treasure for years to come.
The Cords/The Tartans
Each option be it Wiccan/Pagan/Humanist etc will have a slightly different approach. The couples traditionally stand side by side or face to face and hold hands as the celebrant ties the cords or tartans together around their clasped hands. As the couples come to the end of their verbal commitments each will take a tied end and pull away tying the knot and symbolically joining their families with their union but also symbolising the creation of their own which is a beautiful thing.
Handfasting is one of the more beautiful Scottish/Celtic/Pagan traditions. Many non-Pagan and non-Wiccan couples are adopting this old old tradition as I mentioned. It's a great way for couples to express their unique personalities and break away from the more stuffy formal elements of union ceremonies. And it's a great way to clothesline zombies in a pinch.

A very Comrie Croft wedding......
We've had a few weddings this week already. Phewfers! Here's a couple of cheeky piccies from Dave and Amy's Scottish/Aussie Comrie Croft wedding in Perth the other day. It was beautiful! The Scottish weather was decidedly Scottish! A wee bit of dramatic cloud but luckily some un-forecast sunshine! The Bride and Groom and their respective clans made us feel as welcome as can be and craic was mighty. You can see why they chose somewhere as special as Comrie Croft for their rustic vintage soiree. Whats more is Dave even used to work here as a dogsbody many moons ago. So as you can imagine when the option came up to have the wedding here, everything felt just right.

Advice From The Expert-ables......
It might just be the two of you walking doon the aisle, but seriously rest assured the number of people bringing your mad vision of the celebration of union to life is huge. We've been chatting with our colleagues in the wedding industry for a while now. Taking time to discuss with other professionals from fellow photographers and planners, venues, caterers in an effort to get some good honest opinions and advice for our followers and couples on practical strategies for organising your big day.
Take The Recommendations With A Pinch Of Salt
A friend’s good word is a good indicator, but there isn't a magic vendor who with tetris master like precision forms and fits to every clients needs. Compatibility is key, compatability is prudent: Do you have the same commonalities and mindset as the advisor? If not , proceed very carefully. It's good to cherry pick your favourite vendors to suit your vision. It might be considered bad taste to scoop up all the vendors from a friends wedding but honestly don't make it all about checking off your list. Think of yourself first and make sure you're hiring the right people, bringing the right tool ( insert joke by Katie about me being a tool ) for the job.
Follow Your Heart
Dogs ( felines in our/my case) are well know for being mans best friend but in your case at least for however long your prep-period is - pen and paper are definitely now yours. Spend a couple of weeks separately recording inspirations for your wedding day in some wee notebooks. It's fascinating to sit down with a drink with your future significant other and see what ideas you are both bringing to the table. Katie and I both knew BBQ was the way forward for our rustic vintage farm wedding. Pinterest is a great place to centralise your inspirations into specific boards once you properly start collaborating on element of planning.
The Guest List
So you're finally getting down to brass tacks. The invite numbers. This is not to say be brutal, just be practical. If your relationship with this person or persons is something you have now and you want it to continue say another 30/40 years then boom add them onto the list! Otherwise, don't worry about it.
Talk To Those That Know Yo!
If you've done the impossible and thrown together your final candidates for each major service provider then you're doing well. Don't jump into any situation lightly. As my lawyer uncle says continuously - do the due dilligence! Do your homework! Ask to speak to a previous client. This may seem unreasonable and you may be one of those people who don't like conflict or to be an imposition. Nae bother - get your partner, best man, Mother of the bride to do it. Just do it. It's worthwhile and it's essential to be able to build a current picture of what your vendor is like at all stages of delivery.
First Impressions Count!
Think back - how did your professional or company react to your first meeting or enquiry? All of this is important. Quick replies are always nice but bare in mind if they don't get back to you within 5 minutes of your last email they might have their plateful. If someone is relaxed in their speech or formal in their emails which of these suits your temperament? Which of these puts you at ease? If the wedding and function band or the DJ tells you to come to a wedding to check them out, it ’s a hint that they may invite strangers to your day, so make very sure they understand that your day is for kin, clansmen and deplorable uni friends only!
Style Is One Thing, Range Is Another....
Always be on the lookout for as diverse a portfolio as you can find when you’re hiring any vendor or company. You want to see a body of work with a consistent level of quality -- not a one-trick pony who can only do, say, classic vintage. Your bag may definitely not be a Rocky Horror themed karaoke fishnet frolic! Although you're dead to me if it isn't. Seek out someone who pushes their craft and their service out-with their comfort zone and don't be afraid to ask your vendors about the scope for change once you've discussed ideas. What does your caterer do if you have unexpected extras turn up on the day? Can you suggest extra shots to your photographer on the day?
Can Supplier Lists Be Wrong? Is Familiar Tim-Curry-Fab?
In a good few instances, a vendor having a prior working relationship with a venue or site can be a big massive bonus. They should now be aware know about any shortcomings or ideosyncracies -- like if the space needs an AC or a genny or is it a struggle to get equipment in and out of -- and how do they work around factors like this. Is there a sound/volume limiter that your musical entertainment will have to contend with and is there a performance curfew that you or they are not aware of? If you’re having doubts, you can ask the venue manager or co-ordinator about their experience. Anyone who has worked in a customer service facing role will tell you that their impenetrable veneer of professional smiles can mask a wealth of stresses and strains. What is good to know is how well they play with others. I'm a photographer so there can be instances where I have never worked a venue before quite regularly in the year, but I prepare for this with a site visit and potentially the couples engagement shoot. This can be a hugely beneficial way to let all the worries of being photographed melt away in a heap of giggles whilst being able to scope out all the wonderful neuks of the venue with your couple and being able to further collaborate in the planning of awesome shots.
Hire People Who Are Straightforward, Helpful and Respect Your Budget
Whether you're forking out £100 or £100 million, hire a vendor that will perform on the day, when it counts. The best vendors will also be able to bring you great ideas on how to streamline your organisation for the day and even clever ways to pick out other vendors and a little industry knowledge can be a great inside track and confidence builder for overwhelmed couples. Look for the people who have your best interests at heart in short. You tend to find some of the nicest most wonderful and professional people in the industry are those that have been at it a while. Our wedding planner Roni Hyslop of All Wrapped Up Scotland was absolutely amazing. Her two decades of experience made her service just about the smoothest we've ever had the pleasure of being a part of. Never underestimate the value of a good planner future couples!
You want to collaborate with someone who will listen to your every disparate and caffeine crazed messenger rant and create with-you; the wedding that people will remember as quintessentially you. If you are a all about the bling don't go getting married in barn just because it seems like it's the only way to accommodate the numbers - see if your hotel, castle, community hall will let you knock up a decent sized marquee that you can decorate however you want without losing the natural light.
Don't be afraid to say no or even walk the hell away!
If something or someone is not meeting your expectations you need to express that otherwise the client/vendor relationship can turn toxic very quickly. Express the issue like and adult. I hate to make that sound so condescending but we are talking about weddings and these things can take on an emotional life of their own and you can feel out of control even divorced from the proceedings unless you take a breath once in a wee while and put your rational hat on. Speaking of breath we both got really into meditation during our wedding planning. Just 10 mins a day made us feel a lot more rational and in control and funnily enough we started having less arguments. We even said goodbye to a few vendors along the way but it was always after a good discussion with each other and having consulted other professionals to play devils advocate to make sure we weren't being hasty puddings!
